Learning Disabilities
Some students with learning disabilities (LD) may require extended time for testing. Extended time is needed because it takes longer for some students with LD to process information (e.g., to determine what the test questions are asking for and to formulate their responses). Notetakers, texts on tape, and assistive technology devices may also be deemed appropriate.
Documentation Guidelines for Learning Disabilities Verification
In order to provide a student with academic accommodations verification of the disability is needed. Accommodations at MWCC must be approved by the counselor for students with disabilities after a discussion with the student. The verification should include the following:
- A diagnosis of the learning disability.
- A psychoeducational evaluation of the learning disability administered
by a qualified professional or educational team within the last three
years. It should report subtest scores, standards scores, and percentile
ranks, and include the following:
- Cognitive testing: the results of a Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (Revised or III), the Woodcock Johnson Psychoeducational Battery Test of Cognitive Ability (Revised or III), or a complete neuropsychological battery. It should describe your processing strengths and weaknesses.
- Achievement testing: the test results from individualized achievement measures that describe your strengths or difficulties with both basic and higher level skills in reading, math, written expression (e.g., Stanford Achievement, Woodcock Johnson Psychoeducational Battery-Test of Achievement.)
Note: Any relevant medical/educational or diagnostic records which would give additional information should also be submitted.
