Tutoring
At the Academic Support Center, professional
and peer tutors help students gain a better understanding of their
course work. Some of our professional tutors also teach the subjects
in which they tutor. Peer tutors have taken the course in which
they are tutoring and were recommended by their professors. All
tutors, peer and professional, participate in on-going professional
development workshops.
Math
Our math tutors provide tutoring
in mathematics from arithmetic to calculus and statistics, as
well as assistance with the mathematics concepts in courses in
the
natural
and social sciences and business. If you would like to know more
about math tutoring, contact Bonnie Wicklund, Math Coordinator,
(978) 630-9306. Writing
Our writing tutors help students learn and apply the basic
principles of effective composition and master revision and
editing skills.
They are trained not only to assist students who are writing
papers for composition classes, they also help students working
on papers
for history, nursing, psychology, sociology, American Sign Language,
and more. Call Joan Croteau, Writing Coordinator, at (978) 630-9307,
if you have questions about tutoring in writing.
Other academic subjects
For help in almost all other
academic subjects, we can match students with qualified tutors
and also sponsor study groups. A student can sign up for tutoring
any
time during the semester: during the first week of classes or half-way
through the semester. Our advice to students, however, is "dont
wait until the last minute to get help." The earlier students
come to the center, the better able we are to assist them. Tutors
meet with students by appointment at mutually convenient times.
For more information about peer tutoring, call Wendy Lynn Bailey
at (978) 630-9333.
