Pathways to Success Program
2007-2008 Abstract
Pathways to Success is a chance for current juniors and seniors or older students who have not yet passed the MCAS exam to prepare for college admissions while exploring other options available to them. The Pathways to Success program offers the chance to enroll in a program designed to prepare them for MCAS retesting, college entrance, or exploration and assistance with other education and career paths. This program offers a unique and true to life academic college experience, allowing the student to focus on coursework that will be relevant to passing the MCAS exam and other college entrance requirements. Students will be offered the chance to travel to the November and March MCAS exam, will be exposed to college and career exploration seminars and will receive incentives as they complete the program. Students participating in Pathways to Success are considered MWCC students and as such will be awarded the same library and academic support privileges as MWCC students. The MCAS Pathways to Success Program is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education and administered by Mount Wachusett Community College.
An MCAS Prep course will run each fall, winter and summer semester. Classes generally run in the evening at the MWCC Gardner Campus. Currently, classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 8:30 pm. There is no cost for this program. Students will receive math and/or English classes, college seminars, text books, materials, meals and transportation assistance free of charge for participating in the program. Applications are due to the Coordinator. All applicants will require parent approval. Participants must have copies of their MCAS scores.
MCAS Works!
2007-2008 Abstract
MCAS Works! is a collaboration between MWCC and Fitchburg High School. It is designed to provide intensive remediation for 40 juniors and seniors. The goal is to strengthen academic skills by providing meaningful work-based learning instruction. This program will creatively reengage students in their education and provide them with an impetus to pursue graduation.
Participating students will receive intensive, in-school, small group instruction and one-on-one tutoring that address identified gaps in English Language Arts and mathematics. The program provides career exploration activities including job shadowing, structured internship placements, community service learning projects, guest lecturers, and field trips. Also, Student Success Seminars are offered and prepare students for higher education and the world of work including career counseling, vocational planning and instruction on test taking skills, team building and leadership development.
