MWCC Student Email Tips
Login to your MWCC email account
Every registered student receives an mwcc.edu email account. Use of this account is governed by the MWCC Acceptable Usage Policies (PDF). This account can be accessed from any computer attached to the Internet through a web-interface. Popular email software such as Eudora, Pegasus, Calypso, or Outlook Express can be configured to read your email too. Any email software capable of handling the POP3 protocol can be configured to access MWCC email. The College will only use your mwcc.edu email address for its electronic communications. You may forward your MWCC email to another account if desired. Student email is accessible at http://mail.mwcc.edu. A login name and password are required for access. See the item below for instructions on what your email address is.
Here are some tips to make access and use easier:
Your email address:
Your email address consists of your first initial, the first 3 characters from your last name, and the last 4 digits of your computer-generated student identification number. This allows us to create many unique email addresses, and the address is constructed from information that you should already know. For example, John Smith, whose student identification number is 12345678, will have an email address of jsmi5678@mwcc.edu. The email domain name mwcc.edu is reserved exclusively for students. Email sent to faculty/staff is addressed to the College's longer domain name: mwcc.mass.edu.
Your Student ID and Password:
Student IDs, or login names, are created at the start of each semester. Your login name consists of your first initial, the first 3 characters of your last name, and the last 4 digits of your student identification number. For example, John Smith's login name would be jsmi5678.
Some MWCC students have last names shorter than three letters. When this occurs the email account name is created from the first two letters of your first name and your complete last name. The numeric portion of the email account is created in the same way as other students.
Passwords are created from the first letter of your first name, the first letter of your last name, and the first 4 digits of your student identification number. John Smith's password would be js1234. The same login id and password are used by Blackboard.
Accessing email from the web:
Web access is provided by accessing the email server at this address: http://mail.mwcc.edu. Log in using your account name and your password. Your password was created with the first letter of your first name, the first letter of your last name, and the first 4 digits of your student id. John Smith's password would be js1234.
Common errors:
- Entering an incorrect user name to log in.
- Entering an incorrect password.
- Attempting to send email to the wrong domain. For example: jsmi5678@mail.mwcc.edu. The correct address is jsmi5678@mwcc.edu
- Attempting to send email to faculty/staff at mwcc.edu. The correct domain for faculty/staff is mwcc.mass.edu.
- Email account was not created. Please let us know if you don't seem to have an account. We will create one immediately for you.
How to forward your email to another address:
If you have another email account that you would prefer to use you can easily redirect your MWCC email to another account. To do this you login using the web interface at http://mail.mwcc.edu. Once connected, select Rules from the links on the page. On the Rules page find the Redirect All Mail to: box. Carefully enter the email address to which you want email directed. Be sure the check the box next to the Redirect All Mail to label! Click the Update button on the page to complete this command.
Please be sure to test the redirection command by sending yourself an email.
Configuration Information for eMail Software:
There are many good email software products available. Some must be purchased, but many are free. If you are looking for email software a good place to visit is http://www.tucows.com. Tucows lists many software titles, and most can be downloaded directly from the site.
To configure email software you will need this information:

- Your account name is the email address assigned by the College.
