Matt
Young appeared on the Mount stage for the first time in 1984 as
Avery in Charlotte’s Web and went on to perform in more than 16 Theatre
at the Mount productions. His TAM credits include the role of John in Peter
Pan (1985), Gilbert in Anne of Green Gables (1989), Valere in Tartuffe
(1989) and Don Carney in Biloxi Blues (1989), to name a few.
After graduating from Gardner High in 1990, Matt attended New York University
and graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Music (Voice) with a musical theatre
concentration. In his first year at NYU (at age 18) he made his professional
debut playing the angel Gabriel in an Off Off Broadway production of The Butterfingers
Angel. His first big job out of college was the European tour of Leonard Bernstein’s
On the Town, performing throughout Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
Highlights of Matt’s career since then include the 1997 – 1998 national
tour of A Chorus Line (Don), the 1999 Ogunquit Playhouse production of A Funny
Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and the 1995 national tour of The Wizard
of Oz (Scarecrow). He has numerous appearances in dinner theatres/regional/summer
stock in such shows as Oklahoma!, The Pajama Game, Hello Dolly! and Guys and
Dolls.
Matt has also appeared as an extra in the films A Beautiful Mind, Kate and Leopold,
and most recently Marci X and has been a featured performer on the MS Saga Rose’s
Millenium World Cruise.
Since moving to Australia in 2001, Matt has starred in two short films: Stalkers,
Inc. (screened at the Sour Grapes Film Festival at Fox Studios, Sydney) and Breakdown
(screened at Sydney’s Valhalla Theatre.) He has appeared as a guest cast
member in two episodes of Comedy, Inc., a prime time sketch comedy show in Australia.
Recently, Matt starred as Czolgosz in Sondheim’s Assassins at the new Theatre
in Sydney and wrote a profile of the production which was published in The Sondheim
Review’s fall 2003 issue. He spent a season with The Bondi Ballet, performed
in the new Australian production of The Story of Abbey, and created a one-man
show, Lucky to Be Me, which he performed for three seasons in Sydney and one
season in New York.
Currently, Matt is in rehearsals for the Australian production of the Tony Award
winning musical The Producers, the first production of the musical outside of
North America. He will play a featured ensemble role and will work with the original
director Susan Stroman, and have Mel Brooks as an honored guest at Opening Night.
Matt speaks very fondly of his time spent at Theatre at the Mount. Besides performing,
he spent much time building sets, ushering, working on stage crew and volunteering
at Summer Drama Camp programs, acquiring skills that have served him well. Matt
always tries to catch a Theatre at the Mount production whenever he comes home – his
name is on a seat in “row O” and his parents are long time subscribers.
He advises young performers to “go for it!” stating that people who
persevere and have skill and talent eventually reap some amazing benefits.
Congratulations Matt! Theatre at the Mount is proud to claim you as part of the
family!
