CODE Case Law is the law of reported judicial opinions. "Stare Decisis" or precedent is the basic concept of case law. Court Reporters and Digests can be used to research case law. Court Reporters (also called Reports, Cases, Opinions, or Decisions) contain the published opinions of the court in chronological order by date of decision. Digests are multi-volume subject indexes to case law. They provide very brief summaries of reported court decisions and are arranged by subject matter. Those digests published by West Publishing Company use the "topic and key number" system of arrangement. Federal

Digests LEGAL CITATIONS Court cases are identified using legal citations. The citation identifies the name of the court reporter in which the opinion is cited, the volume number, and the page on which the opinion begins. For Example: 108 S.Ct. 76 Parallel Citations are used when a single court decision is re-published verbatim in a second or third source. For example, when a case appears in a reporter published by the U.S. (or state) government and in a commercial reporter: 108 S.Ct. 76 = Supreme
